Our Common Books are a group of readers in the Grand cinema hall, where we talk about ourselves from month to month through books that have often come up more casually during class breaks, meetings over coffee or pub tables, but we have never really been able to talk deeply about why they inspire us. In this series of programs, we are not on the trail of recent appearances, and we are not driven by deep literary theoretical interest. We are really looking for our common books. The first readers invited in 45-50 minutes will talk about the book and their own reading experience, and then we will continue to discuss the book together.

The Seventeenth Book: BRET EASTON ELLIS: American PSYCHO

Literature is very rarely able to cause a global scandal like that of American Psycho. Publishers who have already signed a contract to publish the work and paid in advance serious sums to Ellis, receded and stopped publishing. This book often crosses the threshold of bearability. What his writer thinks and describes about the raging of perversion and violence is beyond the limits of normal man's comprehension and moral sense. However, what he says can be interpreted and judged: he shakes, upsets, and mercilessly confronts a world to which he is even reluctantly recognized.

The main figure of the novel is Pat Bateman, a 26-year-old yuppie from Wall Street, an intelligent, handsome, elegant and rich young man. Its essence is the shiny surface: it walks in the most fashionable and expensive items, it eats in the most popular restaurants with friends and serial girlfriends, its taste in food and drink is high-lord, luxurious apartment filled with high-tech entertainment electronics, its opinion from music to politics is up-to-date. But Bateman is, in fact, a valueless psychopathic monster trying to escape with sex orgies, more sophisticated killings, and even cannibalism.

Sometimes he stumbles between two questions, it's because he listens like this. He endeavors to make woven threads of conversation in such a way that, if possible, he wakes up thoughts in those present - even if they do not know the story of that book.

// TOTH PÉTER ZOLTAN He studied English-American (teacher) at BTK, although he only gave his thesis in English. He was an au-pair, writer, bartender, entrepreneur, driver, electrician assistant worker, amateur hobby musician and alternative theatre member, but he also built a house, and now he suffers as a day laborer of commercial television.
